An East Sands Surprise Proposal – When the Haar Rolled In on St Andrews Beach
When I plan a surprise proposal with a fiancé or fiancée to be, there’s always lots of prior planning – we try to be as prepared as possible through pre-session consultations and location scouting to minimise anything being left to chance on the day!
However, no matter how meticulously you plan, there are sometimes just days that are determined to throw everything at you. Now I’m used to handling Scottish weather – it’s part of the job – but this time it wasn’t wind, it wasn’t rain. Just possibly the thickest and farthest stretching haar I’ve ever experienced in my 8 years in St Andrews.

A Surprise Proposal on East Sands Beach, St Andrews
M had been in touch months before, quietly arranging everything without S suspecting a thing (though he did admit they were already thinking about the wedding – so she knew to some extent!). M’s idea was beautiful – one of S’s favourite local beaches, the sand and the sea, and St Andrews standing tall in the background. It was the perfect picture in our planning – and then on the day, the haar rolled in.

If you’re not familiar with haar, it’s a type of sea fog that creeps in off the North Sea – thick, soft, and completely indifferent to your carefully laid plans. On a mild day in Fife it can arrive without much warning, and on this particular morning it swallowed the town whole. Within the space of an hour, we’d gone from a clear view of St Andrews Cathedral to photographing in a cloud. I’ve attached the above photo to show how consuming the haar is. The coast behind those seagulls is probably only 30 metres away, but it’s essentially been totally blanketed. This isn’t even representative of the haar at its thickest that day!
There was a moment where I texted M and I genuinely recommended regrouping – the vision he’d had was slipping sideways but M held strong, and he was so right to do so.

Why the haar made it better
What the fog took away in backdrop, it gave back in atmosphere – in spades. East Sands became otherworldly. Not only that, but it took away all distraction. When M got down on one knee, the world effectively disappeared. No background to compete with, no tourists on the Pier, no dogs on the beach (though dogs ARE always welcome at my sessions…). Nothing – just the two of them, and this ethereal Scottish coastline that felt like it belonged to them, and them alone.

The reaction – pure joy, pure surprise
S – while yes, she had clear plans for the wedding – had absolutely no idea that this moment was coming that day. The moment M proposed, her face said everything. Pure joy, immediate and unguarded, followed by happy tears. As a documentary photographer, those are the moments you live for. No posing required, no direction needed, in fact no input from me whatsoever. This was one of those times when the photos just direct themselves, and any sort of interruption or interference by me would have taken away from it. This was just two people absolutely basking in a magical moment that they’ll fondly remember for years to come.

From Proposal to Engagement Session
Not long after that afternoon on East Sands, M and S got in touch to book their wedding photography, and I couldn’t have been more delighted. There’s something genuinely special about being trusted to follow a couple’s story.
If you’re newly engaged and wondering whether an engagement session is worth it before your wedding day, here’s my honest answer: yes, always. Not because you need more photographs (though you will love them), but because it gives us time together before the wedding. By the time your big day arrives, being in front of my camera feels completely natural. The nerves are gone. You know how I work, I know how you move, and the whole day flows so much more easily as a result. It’s also a great opportunity to capture photos for your Save the Dates and any memorabilia at the wedding!

What to expect when I photograph a surprise proposal
Planning a surprise proposal is one of the most nerve-wracking things a person can do, and the last thing you need is a photographer adding to that stress. My approach is simple: we communicate thoroughly in advance, I position myself discreetly, and I stay invisible until the moment happens. You focus entirely on your partner. I’ll take care of everything else.
Every proposal is different. Some couples want the grand gesture with a crowd of friends hidden nearby. Others, like M, want something quiet and intimate – just the two of them, and the sea (even though we did envision St Andrews at least being in the background!).
Other coastal photography locations across Scotland
While St Andrews holds a very special place for me personally and professionally, Scotland’s coast offers no shortage of incredible settings for engagement and proposal photography. Sections of the Fife Coastal Path, the dramatic cliffs at Kilt Rock on Skye, the sweeping sands of Lunan Bay, the harbour villages of Crail and Pittenweem – each has its own personality and its own kind of magic. I’m always happy to discuss locations and help you find the one that feels right for you as a couple.
