Authentic, Emotional, Timeless Engagement Photography based in St Andrews, Fife.
Just got engaged? Let’s celebrate it properly. Whether the proposal was last week or last year, an engagement shoot is one of the best decisions you can make before the wedding – and St Andrews is one of the most stunning places in Scotland to do it. From the golden light on West Sands to the ancient cobblestones near the Cathedral ruins, I know exactly where to take you to make the most of St Andrews’ incredible backdrops at every time of year. The result is a relaxed, natural set of images that genuinely look like you.
An engagement shoot is also a brilliant opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Couples who shoot with me beforehand almost always tell me they felt so much more relaxed when it came to their couple portraits on the day itself – and it shows in the photos. Just you and your partner, taking a wander around one of Scotland’s most beautiful towns.
The photos from your engagement session make great additions to save-the-dates, wedding websites, social media announcements, and timeless albums. Every gallery is delivered with high-resolution, fully edited images ready to print, share, and cherish for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions I hear most from couples just like you. Don’t see yours? Drop me a message and I’ll get straight back to you.
Honestly, it depends entirely on you as a couple and what you like to do! St Andrews is one of those rare towns that has something special for every kind of couple, whether that’s the dramatic ruins of the Cathedral, the wild open stretch of West Sands, or the quietly beautiful St Andrews Botanic Gardens. I always start by getting to know you both before suggesting locations, because the best backdrop is the one that actually means something to you. History lovers, beach wanderers, nature seekers: St Andrews has you covered, and I know exactly how to make the most of every corner of it.
St Andrews weather has a personality of its own, and I’d rather work with it than against it. If the forecast is looking unfavourable in the days leading up to your session, I’ll get in touch and we can look at shifting the timing – even on the same day, moving a session from midday to early morning or late afternoon can make a significant difference to both the light and the conditions. I also actively encourage people to not stress too much – we can study the apps that tell you the exact position of the sun, but at the end of the day the cloud can roll in and totally lay waste to the time and energy we spent trying to figure it out exactly. That said, some of my favourite images have come from overcast or moody days – the soft, diffused light that comes with a cloudy Scottish sky can be genuinely beautiful. We’ll always make the call together based on what works best for you both.
It depends on how much of the St Andrews area you want to explore. My one and two hour sessions are perfect for covering the town itself – there’s more than enough variety within St Andrews to fill either session without ever feeling rushed. For couples who want to venture further afield – perhaps combining the town with the ancient woodland of Tentsmuir Forest, or the dramatic coastal scenery at Kingsbarns Beach – my four hour Signature session gives us the time and flexibility to do it properly, including travel between locations. I find this tends to suit couples visiting from further afield, particularly from the US, who want to make the most of their time in Fife and come away with a really comprehensive set of images from across the region.
Turnaround times vary depending on the package you book, simply because the more locations and variety we cover together, the more care and time the editing process requires. As a general guide, Essential sessions are typically delivered within two weeks, Classic within three, and Signature within four. That said, I’d always rather take a little longer and deliver a gallery I’m genuinely proud of than rush images out the door. You’ll receive a private online gallery with all your fully edited, high resolution images: and they’ll be worth the wait, I promise.
The short answer is: wear something that feels like you. The best engagement photos come from couples who are comfortable and relaxed, and nothing undermines that faster than feeling a bit like you’re wearing a costume. That said, a few things do tend to photograph beautifully – neutral tones, soft colours, and gentle textures work particularly well in St Andrews’ natural light. Think your favourite dress or a shirt you genuinely love, rather than something you’ve bought specifically for the occasion. I’m not against patterns, but choose wisely, and pair anything jazzy with a complementary block colour to avoid overwhelming the colour palette! Remember to choose your outfits together, too, as outfits that are showstoppers individually can sometimes be tricky when put side by side. If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to chat through outfit ideas during your pre-session consultation – it’s one of those small details that makes a big difference to the final gallery.
Absolutely, and I actively encourage it. The best engagement photos happen in places that mean something to you, so if you have a favourite corner of St Andrews in mind, let’s use it. The one thing I’ll gently guide you on is logistics. In an Essential one hour session, we can comfortably cover two locations that are reasonably close together – think St Salvator’s Quad paired with Castle Sands, or West Sands with the Swilcan Bridge on the Old Course if you’re keen golfers. Trying to cover too much ground in a shorter session means rushing between spots, which is the last thing you want. The Classic and Signature packages give us the breathing room to be more ambitious – including venturing beyond the town itself to places like Tentsmuir Forest or Kingsbarns Beach. Not sure what’s possible in your session? I’ll always advise honestly during your planning consultation.
All of my couples receive 24/7 email support regarding their booking, and I’m available for location visits and consultations, as per my packages above.
