Surprise Proposal photography Scotland – Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a proposal in Scotland brings a few questions of its own: travel, permissions, weather, and finding cover in places that often have no crowds to blend into (which of course is part of the appeal!). These are the ones I’m asked most often, but don’t worry, everything gets talked through properly on your consultation call.

Yes, and it’s one of the most common enquiries I get. Many couples book months ahead around a trip, so as soon as your travel dates are confirmed, get in touch. Because you won’t have seen the location yet, I scout the spot on your behalf, check access and timings, and give you a Plan B. You’ll also have my number so we can adjust if flights or weather change. My Dalhousie Castle destination proposal shows how this works in practice.

It depends on the setting. Summer gives you long evenings, with sunset around 10pm at midsummer, but popular spots are busier. Autumn brings low, warm light and colour in gardens and glens, which is what Jacob and Sarah had at Cambo in October. Winter can be spectacular in the Highlands, though daylight ends before 4pm. Spring is changeable but quiet. Choose the season for the look you want, then we plan the time of day around it.

We plan for it from the start. In the Highlands the forecast can differ between one glen and the next, so I check conditions closely in the days beforehand and we agree a Plan B location and a backup date. Cloud and mist often photograph better than clear skies, and overcast light is flattering for faces. What matters is that you have warm, waterproof clothes that look good, because you’ll still be outside afterwards. In summer, midges are worst around dusk on still, damp days, so we’ll factor that into the timing too.

Often, yes. Gardens, estates and castles are usually private or run by charities, and some ask for permission or have their own rules about professional photography. For example, Cambo Gardens asks you to contact their team first. Most of Scotland’s open hills and glens can be accessed freely, but car parks and visitor sites have their own rules. We’ll check this on your planning call, so you’re not finding out on the day.

Distance and a long lens. In open landscape there are no streets or crowds to blend into, so I stay well back and use the terrain, such as a rise in the ground, rocks or a bend in the path, for cover. The long lens means I can still frame you with the mountains behind you. We agree your signal beforehand, and I give you a cover story that fits the setting, such as a hiker or someone shooting landscapes nearby. If you’re noticed, I’ll chat and carry on.
A few things I’ll always consider with you: how busy the location is likely to be at your chosen time, whether there’s natural cover for me to shoot from without being obvious, and what the light will be doing. Tide times matter at West Sands. Sunday mornings are far better than afternoons at the Swilcan Bridge. The Botanic Gardens can close at short notice in high winds, so we always have a Plan B – Craigtoun Country Park being a favourite backup.
If you have a location in mind already, bring it to our planning call and we’ll work out whether it’s the right fit – and if it is, exactly how to make it work. If you’re open to suggestions, I know this town well enough to match the setting to the moment.
Want to see how different St Andrews locations have worked for real proposals? The blogs above are a good place to start.

My surprise proposal packages start from £295 for the proposal itself plus up to 20 minutes of portraits, with Classic (£350) and Bespoke (£550+) adding longer sessions, more locations and an engagement shoot at a later date. Full details are in the packages above. For locations outside my standard travel radius, I’ll quote travel and any accommodation separately and openly. If you’d like portraits on another day, that’s a separate engagement shoot. The Bespoke proposal package combines both – a couples shoot on the proposal day, plus a full engagement session later at a special rate, so you have both moments covered.
Full explanations of what’s included at each level can be found above in the package details, and you can read more about the separate St Andrews engagement shoot packages I offer here.

You can read more Frequently Asked Questions on my St Andrews-specific proposal photography page here which may help you plan more – but as I say, we will chat everything through on your pre-booking consultation call, which is included in every package.
