Why St Andrews Is the Top Spot to Say “I Do” in Scotland (And Why I Love Photographing Here)

Planning your wedding in St Andrews? You’re not alone – and honestly, I get why. With its beautiful coastline, historic architecture, and that romantic, windswept charm, St Andrews is the perfect backdrop for saying “I do.”

As someone who lives locally and has photographed countless weddings here, I feel so lucky every time I get to capture a couple’s love story in this little corner of Fife. Whether it’s golden hour portraits on West Sands, vows exchanged under the ruins of the cathedral, or a reception in one of the town’s many charming venues – there’s something truly magical about it all.

Some of My Favourite St Andrews Wedding Locations

If you’re just starting to plan your day here and wondering where to start, here are a few venues and spots I’ve absolutely loved working at:

  • St Andrews Cathedral ruins – perfect for romantic, windswept portraits and a real sense of history.
  • Kinkell Byre – a rustic venue just outside town with views out to sea and a relaxed, boho feel.
  • St Salvator’s Chapel – for couples wanting a classic, traditional ceremony with breath-taking architecture.
  • West Sands Beach – golden hour here is something else! It’s always worth a stroll post-ceremony.
  • Forgans or The Adamson – great for smaller receptions or stylish post-wedding dinners in the heart of town.

Every couple I work with chooses different locations and timings, so no two galleries are ever the same – and that’s part of the fun.

Atia and Shahariar chose the infamous Rufflets Hotel for their Nikah celebration. Rufflets is such a lovely setting for a wedding – tucked just outside the centre of St Andrews, it feels peaceful and private while still being close to everything. The gardens are especially beautiful in the summer months, and there’s a real sense of calm throughout the whole venue. Whether it’s a quiet moment during the ceremony or a stroll through the grounds afterwards, it’s a place that naturally lends itself to the relaxed, authentic photography that I’m always striving to deliver for my couples.

How I Work on a St Andrews Wedding Day

My approach is always relaxed and down-to-earth. I won’t have you posing stiffly or pulling awkward smiles – it’s much more about capturing how things feel on the day. That means lots of natural moments, gentle guidance when needed, and keeping things as stress-free as possible.

Because I know the town so well, I can help with timeline planning, recommend the best photo spots depending on the season and light, and even suggest little ways to make the most of your location. Whether we’re ducking down a quiet lane for a quiet moment, or embracing the wind on the beach – I’m all in with you.

Like Tony and Leah below- this photo is from their engagement shoot, following Tony’s surprise proposal – which I was honoured to photograph.

I wish I could take credit here for whatever Leah’s laughing at, but it was all Tony – that’s the kind of genuine connection that you can trust me to see and capture!

A St Andrews Love Story: Lukez & Martina

Lukez and Martina’s wedding was a perfect example of how special a St Andrews celebration can be. They tied the knot in the historic Burgh Chambers on a soft early summer’s day – the light was beautiful, the town just starting to bloom.

After the ceremony, we wandered through some of my favourite photo spots: quiet corners of the cobbled streets, the edge of the pier with its wide sea views, and the peaceful beauty of St Salvator’s Gardens.

It was relaxed, full of joy, and totally them. Take a look through a few highlights from their day below. These venues ensure your wedding ceremony will be both memorable and meaningful.

A Place Close to My Heart

St Andrews isn’t just where I work – it’s a place that means a lot to me personally. As a graduate, I’ve spent countless days here walking along the beach, catching up with friends over (one too many) coffees in town, and watching the seasons shift across the coastline. So when I photograph weddings here, I’m not just showing up with a camera – I’m sharing a place I genuinely love. I think that connection comes through in the images, and I hope it helps my couples feel even more at home on their big day.
