Kyle and Olivia | A Surprise Proposal on West Sands, St Andrews
A West Sands proposal photographer’s account of one of the best-planned surprises I’ve been part of in my career to date.
The Planning Behind a West Sands Proposal
Kyle had been planning this for months. He’d booked me well in advance, tracked his intended route along West Sands, chosen his spot, and navigated the not-insignificant challenge of keeping the secret across a fairly large circle of family, several of whom had known for a while. The last person he told was Liv’s gran, and he told her the day before, on the very reasonable basis that if she’d known any longer than that, it would have been all over. As a risk assessment, it was probably accurate.
Almost everything went exactly as Kyle had imagined. Except that when they arrived at West Sands, Liv didn’t particularly want to go on the beach. This is one of my favourite details of the whole day – because Kyle had done everything right, had planned every variable he could possibly plan for, and had not accounted for the fact that Liv might just fancy staying on the path above the dunes instead. To his enormous credit, he persevered, and she eventually relented, and thankfully, all became clear to Liv.

The Ring, Coordinated Outfits, and Perfect Overcast Light
Before I get to the moment itself, I want to mention a few things that made this session photograph as beautifully as it did. Kyle had worked with friends to design the ring – which, when Liv eventually saw it up close, tells its own story in the photographs. He’d also, somehow, managed to coordinate their outfits without making it obvious that he was coordinating their outfits: both of them in soft, muted tones that sat really nicely against the pale sand and the overcast St Andrews sky. This is something I always mention to couples planning a surprise proposal in St Andrews, because it makes such a difference to the final images – and Kyle absolutely nailed it.
The light that morning was soft and flat in the way that overcast days in St Andrews often are, and honestly it was ideal. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun – just even, gentle light that was very forgiving and let the two of them be the focus of every frame.

How I Stay Hidden as a Surprise Proposal Photographer
By the time they made it onto the sand, I’d already positioned myself far enough along the beach to be unremarkable – just another person with a camera, which on West Sands is not an unusual sight. Liv had no idea I was there. Kyle knew exactly where I was, and to his credit didn’t once look in my direction, which is harder than it sounds when you’re nervous and trying to act normal.
When the moment came, Liv’s reaction was proper shock! Kyle had done such a good job at keeping the secret that it caught Liv absolutely unawares. Once that surprise had worn off, there was nothing but joy and relief.

After the ‘Yes’ – Wandering West Sands, Newly Engaged
The initial moment had settled – ring on, both of them a little teary and slightly giddy. Can I mention as well, Kyle had even thought to bring tissues. Unprecedented preparedness! We then had a really lovely stretch of time just wandering along the beach together. West Sands is good for this; it’s long enough that you can just walk and talk and decompress from what just happened, and the light was staying consistent, so I could just follow at a distance and let them be. By this point Liv was very glad she’d stepped off the path.

Thinking About a Surprise Proposal in St Andrews?
West Sands is one of those locations that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you – the scale of it, the light, the fact that you can position yourselves with the whole of St Andrews skyline behind you – but the planning still matters, and I’m always happy to help with the logistics. As a St Andrews proposal photographer who knows the beach well, I can advise on positioning, timing, where to stand, and how to make sure you’re not thinking about where the camera is when you’re trying to get down on one knee.
West Sands not the one for you? I’ve also shot proposals on East Sands, Castle Sands, as well as in St Salvator’s Quad– you can read more about each of them by clicking on them!
If you’re planning a surprise proposal in St Andrews – whether it’s at the more University themed St Salvator’s Quad, the cathedral ruins, or somewhere in town – get in touch and we can talk through what would work best for you.
