An Authentic, Candid Surprise Proposal at Dalhousie Castle, Edinburgh

A Late Autumn Engagement at Dalhousie Castle, Edinburgh
This was such a gorgeous engagement for so many reasons, not least that the story you will read below was not Plan A at all! L and N had travelled up from London for a quiet mini break in Scotland, hoping to enjoy the final beautiful autumn colours, and Dalhousie delivered. Sitting just a short 20 minute drive from Edinburgh, Dalhousie Castle is surrounded by acres of beautiful mature woodland that would once have hidden and protected its walls – it is, after all, the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland. For L and N though, the trees were just a welcome presence that framed their big moment perfectly.
A Mini Break in Scotland and a Stay at the Historic Dalhousie Castle
Having arrived at the castle late the night before, L had planned to pop the question in the grounds on a leisurely walk the following morning – but an outfit malfunction meant that it didn’t all come together, and they had to delay until after lunch. With so much riding on the moment, it’s fair to say L was feeling his nerves! But the postponement to the later time of day actually meant that the sun had chance to come out and warm everyone up a bit more, so we didn’t have to get wrapped up in coats for the shoot after the proposal!

Planning an Authentic, Unscripted Surprise Proposal
Originally, L had arranged a different photographer to capture the proposal, but when the plan was delayed, the original photographer wasn’t able to accommodate. Thankfully the staff at Dalhousie Castle were quick on their feet and gave me a call to see if I was able to come in with just a couple of hours’ notice. While it’s always preferable to be able to plan and chat with the proposing partner beforehand, those who know me will know I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie and absolutely thrive in a bit of spontaneity. And times like these are where my approach really marries well to these moments – allowing the natural progression of a story to unravel – capturing natural reactions, without interrupting the flow of events. When you’re not entirely certain how or where the events will unfold at all – and I wasn’t, given I couldn’t speak to L directly without alerting N! – you can’t get any more ‘unscripted’ than that.

When a Last-Minute Change Needed a Calm, Experienced Photographer
Being called in at the eleventh hour could have been stressful, but thanks to the fantastic staff at Dalhousie, one of whom even accompanied us throughout the shoot to help us make the very most of the grounds(!) – and a thoroughly wonderful couple – all went off without a hitch. This really highlighted the importance of working with the right people, good venues and good suppliers – while I’m almost talking about weddings here rather than proposals, the same rationale applies. With the right people around you, these meaningful, memorable moments can be stress-free and enjoyable.

A Woodland Proposal in the Grounds of Dalhousie Castle
After the proposal, we explored some of the castle’s woodland paths, accompanied by a member of staff from the Castle who knew the grounds inside-out. We explored the quiet corners and serene woodland clearings, ensuring every photograph was not only a celebration of L and N’s love, but also a nod to the connection with the Scottish landscape around us. We also visited the old Ice House (pictured above, right) – where, pre-refrigeration, the Castle’s cold goods would have been stored. Built from stone quarried from the cliffs just over the other side of the river, the sense of history here is really remarkable.

A Joyful, Candid Reaction
Besides the gorgeous setting, historic venue and unique pre-amble to this story, the moment that L surprised N by popping the question was really the star of the show. Her expression – disbelief, followed by joy, followed by relieved laughter – was so beautiful to witness and document. Capturing these reactions in the moment is a key part of my job, and a part that I love dearly. No posed image will ever stand up to the power of a real laugh shared between partners, or the intimate shared glances that just can’t be fabricated.
